WHAT EXACTLY IS CALCIUM ALPHA KETOGLUTARATE (AKG)? AKG is the nitrogen-free portion of the amino acid glutamine and a natural intermediate in human metabolism. AKG is involved in the citric acid cycle in the mitochondria and is therefore part of cellular energy production. AKG also plays a role in nitrogen and ammonia homeostasis and in amino acid biosynthesis, i.e., the formation of proteins. The proteinogenic amino acid L-glutamine is formed from AKG and ammonia. L-glutamine is consumed in increased amounts, especially during exercise, but also during periods of stress and infections. Alpha-ketoglutarate, alone or in combination with the amino acid arginine, is particularly popular among athletes and bodybuilders.
